The Future of Cycling Safety
Is the future of cycling safety upon us with the Hovding? The Hovding is an airbag bicycle helmet invented by Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin in Malmo, Sweden. The invention was initially created as part of a thesis project for the founders’ Master of Industrial Design at the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University. The Hovding contains accelerometers that detect unusual movement and deploy the airbag if the movement patterns match the profile of a crash. Each helmet also contains a “black box” that records the accelerometer data ten seconds before a deployment. We at JMR Law are encouraged to see any technological advancement intended to help decrease the number and severity of injuries cyclists can face. A short video of the Hovding can be found here.
